After my Ironlak internship I packed up and moved to Brooklyn, and Outsource became my first full-time design job in New York City. I found the role, applied, and interviewed at their Manhattan office, where they gave me a design challenge on the spot: create a graphic for the company's 25th anniversary. I designed a typographic "25" with the industries Outsource serves built into the letterforms, and that piece ended up being part of what got me hired.
Outsource is a permit expediting firm based in New York City. They work with architects, developers, and building owners to navigate the complex process of construction filings, code reviews, and permit approvals. It is a highly detail-driven industry, and the brand needed to reflect the professionalism and clarity that their clients expected.
When I joined, the websites felt like relics. The digital presence across the parent brand and its subsidiaries had not kept pace with the company, and there was no cohesive visual system tying everything together. BuildingOwl had some existing UX and branding work done, but the rest largely needed to be rebuilt from the ground up. My role sat on the marketing team alongside another designer, two developers, and a small marketing crew, all working out of the Manhattan office.
Across my year and a half at Outsource I worked on the parent brand and three subsidiaries: Outsource CEU, BuildingOwl, and OSINYC. For the parent brand I redesigned logos, refreshed the color system, and rebuilt the website with a modern visual language. I researched design-forward sites on Awwwards to understand what elevated digital experiences looked like, and brought that sensibility into how we approached layout, hierarchy, and interaction across all the properties. Tradeshow materials, social media graphics, digital brochures, and flyers all came out of this work.

Outsource CEU was a subsidiary built around continuing education for architects. In New York, architects are required to regularly complete accredited coursework to maintain their certifications, and CEU was the platform delivering that content. I built the brand identity for CEU from scratch and designed the digital interfaces that translated dense regulatory and code-related material into something clear and approachable. I also produced motion graphics for the CEU video series, which were the educational modules themselves, walking architects through building code topics needed to renew their credits. Brochures and social content supported the brand on the marketing side.
BuildingOwl was a technology product that monitored and surfaced critical building information, things like outstanding code reviews, maintenance records, and building-specific data all in one place. I expanded the existing brand identity and improved the UX across the product to make it more intuitive. One of the more involved deliverables was a long-form flow map documenting the business structure for how BuildingOwl would grow its user base, built as an internal strategic tool for the team. I also designed a printed booklet and brand guidelines to support the product.

A printed booklet introduced BuildingOwl to prospective clients, and a brand guidelines system codified type, color, and logo usage so the product team could extend the identity consistently.

One of the more interesting UX challenges at Outsource was the internal project-tracking software. Employees used it to manage all the information tied to a specific building or job: code requirements, review statuses, building details like when a water heater was last replaced, and anything else relevant to an active filing. The existing interface felt as dated as the public-facing websites. I led a visual redesign that modernized the experience and made the information easier to navigate, which was my first real deep dive into UX/UI thinking at a professional level.

One of the most memorable projects was planning and designing for the company's 25th anniversary celebration. Beyond the original hiring challenge, I created motion graphics for the event itself, which marked the first time I worked with animation as part of a live brand moment. The anniversary piece brought together the visual identity work I had been building across the brand into a single celebratory artifact.
Outsource was where I got serious about digital design. I enrolled in two online courses through DesignLab during this period, one in Interaction Design and one in UX Research, and started applying what I was learning directly to the work in front of me. Projects like the internal tracking software and BuildingOwl pushed me to think beyond how things looked and into how they worked. This is where UX/UI stopped being a side consideration and became central to how I approach every project.
